The case was quoted six times in the high court abortion decisions and five times in the gay rights victory in 2003, Lawrence v. Eisenstadt legalized birth control on March 22, 1972. Perhaps all of us should think of Bill Baird whose U.S. And when anyone asserts that they have a "right to privacy" they don't think of him. When a woman exercises her right to an abortion she doesn't think of him. When a teenage boy purchases condoms over-the-counter he doesn't think of him. So if you know of any organisation, NGO, NPO or any such body that actively advocates for a complete ban of fireworks, look me up.When an unmarried woman fills her birth control prescription she doesn't think of him. I find that I stay up beyond midnight on New Year’s eve just so I am not rudely awakened by the whizz bang of fireworks in the dead of night. It’s not as if someone can set off muted fireworks in the privacy of their own home or property for their own amusement and entertainment without affecting the entire neighbourhood. Now just think how they must feel when fireworks are set off. We are told that a dog’s hearing is so acute that they can hear a locust chewing a blade of grass from a distance of about a hundred yards. If homeless people and vagrants are prohibited – by law – from kindling their crude braziers on pavements and other public spaces on chilly winter nights to thaw themselves, I really don’t see why we tolerate the setting off of fireworks. Dogs are traumatised anew several times each year with such disdainful disregard for their wellbeing that dog pounds, the SPCA and all other agencies that care for man’s best friend are literally overrun on New Year’s eve by a fresh intake of shivering, reeling dogs.

Every year we are witness to entire industrial complexes burnt to the ground and the charred remains of fireworks factories always provide the initial spark. It is about the only hobby that is hazardous for everyone in its value chain. The enjoyment and setting off of fireworks is the gateway hobby and finishing school for would-be arsonists. And the state that allows unfettered access to fireworks is aiding and abetting so-called adults with juvenile inclinations in honing their skills as urban terrorists of sorts. I am as vigilant as everyone when it comes to encroachment by the state on my freedoms and rights as a citizen but I would gladly knuckle down and assist any and every advocacy effort towards this end.Įssentially, the setting off of fireworks is all about what is euphemistically known as disturbing the peace when the real fact of the matter is that it is about individuals who wilfully make a nuisance of themselves because they like to believe that their rights are absolute and the tacit tenets that undergird all social contracts don’t apply to them. The manufacturing, distribution, sales and setting off of fireworks seems one of the easiest things to monitor and stamp out. Of course, such a piece of legislation should be buttressed by sound, compelling reasoning and consistent enforcement.

Citizens who bleat and whine about a draconian law and overkill and overreach should be encouraged to rather set themselves on fire. That should be expressly forbidden as well. This includes religious groupings who claim to celebrate certain holidays and events with setting the skies ablaze with fireworks. In other words, it should lay down the law and all transgressors should be fully aware of the consequences of breaking such law. In instances where the state does intervene, I believe, it should do so unapologetically, decisively and brook no contradiction.

And I’m not referring to half-hearted, limp-wristed legislation or restrictions that permit the use of fireworks under certain circumstances. However, I think in the case of fireworks, the state should intervene. Not restrictions or special permission to rend the nights asunder on certain occasions but a complete ban!Īs a rule of thumb, I think sensible adults should be afforded the space to make up their own minds about things with very little interference, if any, from the state. Although I consider myself someone of a very accommodating disposition, wide tolerances and generally live by the dictum “Live and let live”, I am quite prepared to assist in lobbying efforts for an outright ban of fireworks.
